Description |
The Château du Val de Mercy is located at the Place de l‘Eglise, just behind the church in the village Val de Mercy. Historically is was the seat of the Barons de Coulanges.
For a few centuries, the Château du Val de Mercy had always been involved in the growing of Burgundy wines. It was particularly known for a white wine produced near the village of Val de Mercy in a place called "Pommard". This white Pommard is not to be confused with the famous red Burgundy from Pommard in the Côte de Beaune. In historical documents we find proof that around 1680 the park of the Château was indeed planted as a vineyard: "Le Clos du Château". Unfortunately, most of the old vines were destroyed in the late 19th century by the dreaded phylloxera, which forced an abrupt discontinuation of the wine production.
In 1992, the Château du Val de Mercy started the reconstruction of its wine production. Some first vineyards were planted in the nearby hamlet of Nanteau producing an excellent Pinot Noir. Additionally a wine growing estate was added a few kilometers away in Chitry le Fort (Canton de Chablis) with with technical production facilities at the Place de l‘Eglise in Chitry le Fort and some 30 ha of producing vineyards, which became the Domaine du Château du Val de Mercy. Two thirds of the vineyards are located in the area of AOC Chablis and another third in Chitry le Fort.
In 2007 some the Château du Val de Mercy acquired some additionl vineyards in the Côte de Beau area in the villages Pommard and Auxey Duresses. Additional technical facilities will be implemented in a historical building at the Place de l‘Eglise in Pommard. Finally, in the next few years it will be possible again to enjoy an excellent Pommard produced by the Château du Val de Mery, but this time as a red wine from the Côte de Beaune.
